The National Park Los Glaciares was created in 1937 in order to preserve and to protect a wide area of continental ice and glaciers.
It covers 600,000 Ha. In the south west of the Santa Cruz province.
Undoubtedly the most remarkable of this national park are their ice fields that occupy a surface of approximately 2,600 km2. which implies that more than 30% of the park surface is occupied by ice.
From the continental ice descend 47 major glacieres. The most known is the Perito Moreno that extends over the waters of the South branch of the Argentino lake along a front of 5 km. and a high of 60 meters (2000 feet) over the lake level.
